The Student Profile System is a web based application created for Education for Working Professionals (EWP), a department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that is responsible for recording and distributing course material to students all over the world. The purpose of the application is to provide a central repository for information regarding students who work for the department, which number between forty and fifty each semester. Several modules make up this system, but only one is in use currently. I am part of a team of four people who have been working on the development for over a year.

The operational module is the student application. Applicants fill out a four page form and that information is written to a database. The entire hiring process has been automated from here. Only the administrator may approve or deny the status of an applicant. Students are also provided an easy way to update their information with the department so that the staff have access to current contact information as well as a student's skill levels in different areas.

Several other modules are currently in development. These include a payroll module, where students can report hours and find forms necessary to be paid by the Institute, as well as a maintenance module, where the administrator can modify parts of the application and approve student work hours. We are also looking into the possibility of integrating the system with the Institute's databases so students have an even more secure login and hours can be directly translated to student accounts.
